Activities Available in the Middle School and Senior School

The History Society

Students from Year 5 to Year 12 come together at meetings of the History Society each term to listen to interesting speakers discuss a variety of topics related to the study of History. Speakers for these meetings have included Justice Trevor Morling who spoke of his experiences presiding over the Lindy Chamberlain Case in 1986, Mr Douglas Baker who lived through the Blitz in London and served in the Korean conflict, Elissa Gale who spoke of her experience walking in the footsteps of Australian soldiers along the Kokoda Track and Ceili Roberts who shared her experiences working on an archaelogical dig.

Modern History Movie Club

Students enjoy the opportunity to consider the re-enactment of history through the Movie Club. They have watched and discussed such movies as Hitler: The Rise of Evil and Joyeux Noel, which tells the story of the truce which broke out in many parts of the trenches on Christmas Eve, 1914.

Model Club

Students from Year 7 to Year 12 enjoy working together on models of various types through the Model Club. Students have worked on such activities as diverse as constructing reproductions of castles and painting Warhammer figures. Experimentation with new techniques and materials in construction is encouraged.

Agricultural Show Team

Students from Year 7 to Year 12 have the opportunity to join the Agricultural Show Team. Team members learn to groom and lead the angora goats, steers and laying birds housed at the School. These students then have the opportunity to represent Macarthur at local and regional shows and at the Sydney Royal Agricultural Show.

Mock Trial

Students from Year 11 are able to represent Macarthur in the Mock Trial competition conducted by the NSW Law Society. These students learn about the roles of various people in the court room and develop thier skills in formulating an argument and applying legal principles to a situation.


Debating and Public Speaking

Debating and Public Speaking opportunities exist for students from Year 7 to Year 12. These students are coached by an experienced staff member who assists them to develop their debating and public speaking skills.

These students have the opportunity to compete in local competitions, against other independent schools and in statewide competitions like the Quota Youth of the Year competition, Sydney Morning Herald Plain English Speaking Competition and the Legacy Public Speaking competition.


Streamwatch

Students interested in the environment can join the Streamwatch group which monitors the health of Cobbitty Creek. These students regularly sample the creek water and make observations on the health of the riparian zone that borders it.


Tournament of Minds

Macarthur also enters teams of students from Year 7 to Year 10 in the Tournament of Minds. These teams also compete in regional and statewide competitions.
