Caring for the Whole Child

Macarthur has a well-established approach to the traditional concept of Pastoral Care that encompasses both the academic and social well-being of the child. As a Christian school the spiritual development is another primary concern. Educating the whole child underpins the Macarthur Way.

Pastoral Care and Academic Care are inseparable in dealing with the anxieties and complexities that children are exposed to in today's world. At Macarthur we aim to provide students with more than just head knowledge of how to deal with life's difficulties. We aim to assist them to develop the character traits that are fundamental to contribute positively to our society.

This aim is achieved by providing Academic Care through the teaching and learning that takes place, as well as pastoral care through the Pastoral Care Programme. All teachers have a role in both these aspects of student welfare. In the Infants School and Junior School the class teacher is responsible for both the academic progress and the general well being of the students in their class. In the Middle School and Senior School the class teachers and Faculty Heads are responsible for the Academic Care of the students while Tutors and Heads of Year are responsible for student well being.

The pastoral care of students is directly overseen by the Deputy Headmaster. Each of the four Heads of School play a vital role in ensuring that the programmes on offer provide for the education of the whole child.

Educating the whole child is a clear focus across the school and impacts the teaching and learning that takes place as well as the programmes that provide care and support for the students. The focus on Academic Care and Pastoral Care are obvious within the school and are essential in providing the foundation upon which the students can build their success.
