St Michael Secondary School Tanzania

Macarthur students, staff and families have been supporting the work of St Michael Secondary School, Kilolo, Tanzania since 2005. St Michael School, an Anglican secondary school providing educational opportunities to young people from rural families, was established by Bishop Donald Mtetemela, former Archbishop of Ruaha Diocese.

It was his vision to use education as a tool to overcome the poverty of Tanzania. In a country where only 10% of primary school students have the opportunity to proceed to government secondary school, he dreamt of educating young people who will become the government officials, politicians and community leaders of the future.

In 2006 Macarthur raised funds for the construction of a Boy's Dormitory at St Michael. Since then, other funds have been used for the fitout of the dormitory and for the continued operation of the school.

There are several avenues for students, staff and families to support the work of St Michael School. These include:
  • The Tanzania Trek : Each year the students and staff of Macarthur complete a walkathon on the Cobbitty Campus to raise funds for St Michael School. This is the major fund raising activity completed and has helped to raise over $50,000 for St Michael School since 2006. Children from Transition to Year 12 and staff are involved in this event.

  • Sponsorship of Tanzanian Students: Currently the Macarthur community sponsor twenty students at St Michael School. These students are sponsored by Tutor Groups, classes, individuals and families at a cost of $250.00 for day students and $450.00 for boarders.

A student committee and a staff committee organise other fund raising events throughout the year.
